При мысли об этих миллиардах можно ли себе представить, что у страны нет денег на приведение в соответствующий современным стандартам вид столетней нью-йоркской подземки? На предотвращение очередного потопа в Новом Орлеане? На строительство доступного жилья для тех, благодаря кому функционируют наши города? На то, чтобы помочь Метрополитен-музею восстановить для всех посетителей вход по добровольному пожертвованию? Чтобы расширить поиски других обитаемых планет?

Я посвящаю предпоследний абзац этой книги неизвестному участнику одного из шестисот с лишним маршей в защиту науки, прошедших по всему миру 22 апреля 2017 года . Он держал в руках плакат со словами «ДУМАЙ, ПОКА ЭТО ЕЩЕ НЕ ПРОТИВОЗАКОННО». Думайте! И, думая, попытайтесь вообразить, что каждый из нас представляет собой лишь кратковременную комбинацию атомов и молекул; что наша планета – лишь небольшой камушек, вертящийся на своей орбите в пустоте космоса; что астрофизика, которой в ходе истории часто случалось прислуживать при разрешении человеческих конфликтов, сейчас предлагает нам путь к превращению присущей нашему виду потребности убивать в потребность всем вместе исследовать Вселенную, отыскивать инопланетные цивилизации, находить связь между Землей и остальным космосом – генетическую, химическую, атомную – и беречь нашу родную планету до тех пор, пока через пять миллиардов лет огненная печь Солнца не выжжет все вокруг себя.

Попытайтесь вообразить все это не потому, что это доступно воображению, а потому, что это правда.
