Выдающиеся деятели той эпохи на разные лады повторяли этот призыв снова и снова. «Нет большего зла, чем время, проведенное впустую», «Достойные люди редко сидят сложа руки и ждут, пока с ними что-нибудь случится. Они идут и делают все сами» – традиция приписывает эти слова Микеланджело и Леонардо да Винчи. В заключении к «Государю» Макиавелли взывал к итальянским правителям: «Здесь условия поистине благоприятны… <…> Остальное надлежит сделать вам» [82].

Все они ясно видели глубинную суть того момента, в котором жили: столкновение созидательных и разрушительных сил, которым в конце концов суждено было перекроить человечество и весь мир. Всей своей жизнью они подтверждали свою уверенность в том, что рука об руку с этой борьбой идет неизбежная необходимость участвовать в ней.

И это снова верно.
